A new discovery contradicts Einstein and Newton’s theories of gravity: what scientists discovered

Maybe we completely misunderstood our universe.

Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is an important contribution to Isaac Newton’s classical theory of gravity. Now this theory is the best explanation of how motion in the universe occurs. The authors of a study published in The Astrophysical Journal argue that the behavior of some very slow-moving binary stars cannot be explained by Einstein and Newton’s theories of gravity based on the existence of dark matter. Popular Mechanics believes scientists can explain this strange behavior using an alternative theory of gravity called modified Newtonian dynamics.

In the late 17th century, Isaac Newton introduced the now famous law of universal gravitation. According to this classical theory, all objects attract in proportion to their masses, and this makes it possible to better understand the structure of the universe. However, Newton was unable to explain many gravitational phenomena, which only at the beginning of the 20th century could Albert Einstein explain in his theory of relativity.

But the authors of the new study found that both Newton’s and Einstein’s theories of gravity failed to explain the strange orbital motion of distant binary stars, also known as “wide binary stars.”

Scientists analyzed more than 20,000 such systems within a radius of 650 light-years from Earth and found something strange. When stars reached very low orbital accelerations, the observed accelerations were almost 30-40% higher than predicted by the Newton-Einstein models. However, if these accelerations were high, then they were consistent with the theories. Something strange happens exactly during these ultra-low accelerations.

Now scientists believe that the movement of galaxies and stars in the universe is influenced by dark matter. But scientists know nothing about it, and it may be what drives the strange gravitational interactions between stars.

But the study’s authors believe that another theory, modified Newtonian dynamics, could explain these gravitational quirks, but that doesn’t suggest that dark matter influences the motion of such objects.

According to the scientists, their new discovery is direct evidence of a violation of the standard gravity model under weak acceleration.

Although the new study adds points in favor of modified Newtonian dynamics, an alternative explanation for gravity is still just a hypothesis. Many more observations must be made to prove that the well-known theories of Newton and Einstein are not entirely correct, so that our current understanding of gravity and the universe in general can change.

Focus He has already written that scientists have discovered a new feature in mysterious black holes. Black holes “prefer” to have certain masses before colliding, according to a new study.
