First of all, Starlink and LTE Internet communication will be launched on 16 Intercity+ trains. Passengers who need faster connections will have to pay extra.
Ukrainian trains will gradually be equipped with Internet from Starlink, but free Internet communications were supposed to appear in every carriage by the end of 2023. This is discussed in the comments given by representatives of Ukrzaliznytsia to UNIAN journalists.
“Now Ukrzaliznytsia is very close to implementing the promised Internet on trains. The project will be implemented in several stages. First, the local network will be deployed on 16 Intercity+ trains, then it will be connected to the Internet of Starlink and LTE networks,” Ukrainians were told in the press service of the national carrier.
After this stage, internet will be free for all passengers in test mode. Later, it is planned to allocate a free basic tariff and a higher speed tariff for an additional fee.
Internet on Ukrainian trains: What is known about it
In January 2023, the first Intercity train in Ukraine was equipped with Starlink Internet. While uninterrupted internet access was provided on 96.7% of the route of the Kiev – Kharkov train, the data transmission and reception speed was 65.7 Mbit/s. The Starlink test was carried out directly by the chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Alexander Kamyshin, and the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Fedorov.
The carrier also announced that Starlink terminals will be installed on all Intercity trains by the end of this year, by order of Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Kubrakov.
Let us remind you that, according to the information provided by the Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov, Ukraine reached an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX company to purchase 10 thousand new Starlink terminals in December 2022. According to him, the governments of many countries have agreed to pay for the operation of the terminals.
We also wrote at the beginning of July 2023 that Ukrainians will buy train tickets with a new method. The new algorithm will help you choose a suitable transfer to reach your desired city much faster than using a direct route. You will also be able to change your seat to a more comfortable seat on the road.
