They purr like cats. Named technique used by women who speak with hoarse voices

Researchers have uncovered the secret behind cats’ purring and discovered that it is quite similar to the technique women use to lower their voice.

Many female celebrities are known for their deep, husky voices that set them apart from others. Daily Mail writes that the most famous representatives of this voice are perhaps Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton.

Previously, researchers have examined the mechanism by which women speak with similar voices. In the new study, they focused on understanding how cats purr. Interestingly, it turns out that these two processes have something in common.

Scientists from the University of Vienna have discovered that “special pads” placed on the animal’s vocal cords are responsible for cats’ purring. This explains why they can make these low frequency sounds. But even more fascinating is that the sound production mechanism observed in cats is strikingly similar to the human “squeaky voice” that many people love.

Meanwhile, previous studies have shown that meows and squeals are produced in the larynx of cats, just like in humans. But until now, the mechanism of purring has remained a mystery to researchers.

According to the study’s lead author, Christian Herbst, anatomical studies have revealed a unique “pad” inside the cat’s vocal cords. The studies examined a total of 8 cats and how their larynxes worked when making different sounds. The results showed that cyclic muscle contractions are not necessary to produce a cat’s purr. Instead, the team discovered that cats have a unique pad inside their vocal cords that is responsible for low-frequency sounds.

Herbst said he and his colleagues found this was comparable to vocal phonation, which is found in humans at frequencies below 70 Hz.
