During the excavations, the graves of 23 people were unearthed, along with traces of a ring ditch from the Bronze Age, as well as various funeral items such as knives, jewelry and ceramic vessels. Among them are a young girl and a child who were deliberately laid on their sides.

The girl’s grave contained the following items: two gold necklaces decorated with garnets, a hoop brooch, two blue glass beads, and a silver necklace inlaid with amber that may have been worn on her head or chest. Analysis of the 250 pieces found shows that the cemetery dates back to 6-7 AD. It shows that it has been used actively for centuries.

Professor Alice Roberts, contributing to the BBC’s Digging for Britain programme, said: “The middle of the first millennium in Britain is a mysterious period; there are very few historical sources. So archaeological finds from this period are valuable and help us understand what was what.” “There were beautiful grave goods in the graves, but I’m looking forward to learning more about the people through post-excavation bone and tooth analysis.”

Researchers are preparing to examine these findings in more depth, namely by performing isotope and DNA analyzes of the skeletal remains. This scientific approach aims to identify relationships between embedded individuals and uncover broader genetic connections. In addition, these analyzes can also provide insight into people’s movements and dietary patterns that were common at that time.
