Minister Matteo Salvini he’s back to talk about speed cameras in Italy. Several times the minister repeated his “no” to these instruments as a method of raising funds. For this reason in new traffic rules Provisions will be included for approval and homologation procedures for speed detection systems.

Salvini clarifies that there is nothing wrong with speed cameras as long as they are installed in very specific places, such as near schools or on roads where many accidents occur. Instead, if they are taken to the streets to collect money, it will simply be a new tax. In an interview with Gr1, the minister clarified:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with speed cameras if they are installed to save lives near schools, hospitals, or on streets where there are a lot of accidents. If they are multiplied overnight on two-lane roads to raise money, it’s just another tax.

It is for this reason that I mayors will have to explain why they installed them, where and with what motivation.

We are working on new Road Traffic Regulations to reduce deaths and injuries. Speed ​​cameras would need to be approved nationally, and mayors would have to explain why they installed them, where and with what motivation.

The Minister is therefore returning to consider this issue after yesterday on social networks he commented on the boom in fines collected in 2023 in Italy (an increase of 6.4% compared to the previous year and 23.7% compared to 2019 ).
