March 16, 2023: Martyrs Eutropios, Kleonics, Basiliska – what not to do today

What happened today:

Today the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyrs Eutropius, Kleonicus, Basilisk. They refused to renounce their beliefs, for which they were tortured. The brothers Cleonikos and Eutropius were crucified. The basilisk was stabbed to death with a sword.

People called March 16 “Bear Awakening”. They thought about the real arrival of spring that day, they believed that the bears were starting to wake up in the forest.

On March 16, Ukraine and the world celebrate the Day of Knowledge.

  • walk in the woods
  • lend and borrow money
  • take out the trash after sunset

Folk signs and beliefs:

  • starlings flew – to a good grain harvest
  • the snow melts and goes again – to a long spring
  • sparrows bathe in puddles – in sunny weather
