French actress Emmanuelle Beart said she was a victim of incest as a child. She talked about it in a new documentary. The actress revealed she was abused for four years as a child. The Guardian writes about it.

Beart, 60, who has starred in dozens of movies and TV shows, is co-directing a documentary that was screened at a press conference in Paris on Tuesday. It will air on the French channel M6 on September 24.

Bear is best known for his roles in Mission: Impossible, Manon at the Spring, and 8 Women. Béart received the César film award with Manon from Source in 1986 and was nominated for France’s highest film award seven more times.

The documentary titled “Such Loud Silence” includes the stories of the four incest victims as well as the actor’s own experiences.

In the video message shown at the press conference, Bear said that initially he only wanted to talk about other incest victims, not about himself. “But their honesty and courage got me talking too,” she said.

He noted that the abuse started at the age of 10 and continued until the age of 14. He did not name the culprit. Anastasia Mikova, the co-director of the film at the press conference, noted that the actress’s father, the famous composer and chansonnier Guy Bear, is innocent, not the culprit himself.

In the documentary, Bear’s voice addressing the harasser is heard off-screen. He says: “Because my father, my mother, and my friends didn’t realize anything, you could do it again, and you did it for four years.”

According to Bear, he was “rescued” by his grandmother.

The French government established a commission to protect victims of sexual violence. In France, approximately 160,000 children are victims of sexual abuse each year, and 5.5 million French adults are victims of childhood sexual abuse.
