Mexico’s National Guard records cases of looting, extortion and abuse

One of the security measures introduced by the President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwas the creation of the National Guard to replace the Federal Police.

and although the goal was to exorcise the bad practices of the old corporation and provide the National Guard with trained agents in every sense, the truth is that so far, cases of extortion, robbery, abuse of power and even links to organized crime remain on file.

This was reported by the Reforma newspaper after accessing the reports of the Department of Internal Affairs of the National Guard for the period from 2019 to April 2022.

These reports indicate that one in eight complaints of crime or abuse against said police officers are recognized by the authorities.

A total of 8656 appeals were registered, both anonymous and from affected citizens., and of these, 1135 led to investigations. As a result, 9,175 agents were sanctionedi.e. 7.7 percent of the corporation.

Among the most frequent crimes, 787 extortions by security forces stand out.137 cases of abuse of power and 92 cases of theft of property of the institution, among other things.

were also found 18 Elements Related to Organized Crimea, 10 agents with illicit enrichment, 5 for human rights violations, 3 for lethal force, 2 for health crimes, one for kidnapping, one for smuggling, and one for rape.

In addition, it was found that out of the total number of sanctions 64 percent of the military personnel were arrested.18 percent were punished with restrictions, 17 percent had private reprimands and 0.7 percent public reprimands.
