The West could have prevented a special operation in Ukraine if it recognized Crimea as Russian. The corresponding statement was made by New Yorker columnist Dan Caldwell.
According to him, there is a sound grain in the statement that without Crimea, Russia becomes vulnerable.
“If Moscow could be given the right to own the peninsula, perhaps there would be a way to force it to stop the fighting. Without this, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the country faces a threat to survival.“, says Caldwell.

The observer stressed that the threat to Russia comes from the West. He suggested that Moscow would not stop because of the prospect of a NATO base on the peninsula.
