On Sunday, eight teenage girls who met through social media were charged with the murder of a homeless man in Toronto.the police said.
A gang of three 13-year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds surrounded their 59-year-old victim in a square near the main train station just after midnight. Dec. 18, according to the Toronto Police.
Passers-by who saw the girls stabbing the man on York Street and University Avenue called emergency services, which took the victim to the nearest hospital.
The victim, who had been living in a city shelter for several weeks, died from his injuries, Detective Sergeant Terry Brown said Tuesday at a press conference.

A group of girls whose identity is protected by Canada’s Juvenile Criminal Justice Act may have gathered with the intention of causing trouble. Police said the teens were involved in another altercation about two hours before the homeless man was allegedly killed.
“What allegedly happened that night is consistent with what we traditionally call a swarm or swarm-like behavior,” Brown said.
Three teenagers have police records.Brown said.
The girls live in different parts of Toronto and met through social media, though police don’t yet know how long they’ve known each other. Officials are still figuring out why they’ve gathered in the area and what their plans for the night might have been.
All eight girls have been charged with second-degree murder. They have been taken into custody and are due to return at the end of the month.
