NASA probe dies from Martian dust, causing mission abort

NASA InSight mission ended ahead of schedule December 21 this year after the sensor will be discharged and therefore without communication with the Earth, due to damage caused by Martian dust.

NASA announced that after more than four years of collecting unique scientific data on Mars the mission was aborted after the probe did not respond up to two consecutive attempts to establish communication with the Earth.

“Mission controllers at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California were unable to contact the lander after two consecutive attempts, leading them to conclude that it was The spacecraft’s solar panels are dead”, the space agency said.

A few days earlier, NASA had decided declare mission ended if the lander missed two attempts to communicate with the base on Earth. InSight last contacted Earth on December 15th.

The NASA statement explains that The power outage of the probe was due to dust accumulation on the solar panels. lander, in which it gradually reduced its power, a process that began before the decision to expand the mission was made earlier this year.

NASA reported that will continue to listen for a signal from the landerjust in case, but hearing from him is currently considered unlikely.

Mission goal

InSight, short for “Inside Surveys Using Seismic Surveys, Geodesy and Heat Transfer”. he intended to explore the deep bowels of Mars.

Lander data provided by details about the inner layers of Marssurprisingly strong remnants below the surface of its extinct magnetic dynamo, the weather in this part of Mars and strong seismic activity.

NASA’s Perseverance rover has picked up the first sound of a dust whirlwind on Mars.
