China has commissioned a giant unmanned ship to launch various drones

The Zhuhaiyun seaplane is designed to float autonomously, relying on sensors and satellites, but the operator can always take control.

China has put into service a massive Zhu Hai Yun ship (“Zhu Hai Yun”) with artificial intelligence and various drones on board. The South China Morning Post writes about this, citing a report from the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

Zhu Hai Yun is an unmanned research vessel developed by the Southern Marine Sciences and Engineering Laboratory in Guangdong Province. It is said to be able to navigate autonomously in the open seas thanks to an advanced artificial intelligence system that uses data from sensors and satellites for navigation. Operators can remotely monitor the ship’s movements and take control if necessary. Thanks to its special shape, Zhu Hai Yun travels at an average speed of 13 knots (24 km/h) and a maximum of 18 knots (33 km/h).

With a length of 88.5 m, a width of 14 m and a displacement of 2100 tons, Zhu Hai Yun is larger than the Type 056 frigate of the Chinese Navy, so it can carry a large amount of equipment. Dozens of unmanned vehicles will be placed in Zhuhaiyun: flying, surface and underwater. It is planned to be used to collect environmental data and transfer it to the carrier ship.

On Thursday, January 12, Chinese engineers conducted sea trials of Zhu Hai Yun and tested its capabilities, including navigation, launching and reversing drones. They will continue to test the ship at sea through 2023, reconnaissance, mapping, patrolling and collecting samples for further studies.

“We tested the ship for 12 consecutive hours in unmanned mode. It has been proven to be able to avoid obstacles and plan its own path, and is fully consistent with our original design goals,” said Chen Dake, head of the lab. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In October, Turkey announced that it had developed the world’s first unmanned ship with electronic warfare systems. The ship Marlin SİDA from Aselsan and Sefine is designed to suppress enemy equipment both above and under water.

In November, they wrote that Ukraine is developing its own offensive naval drones. Surface vehicles can scout and attack targets within a radius of 400 km.
