Especially dramatic was what happened to Guerrero in 2003. That year, she worked as a reporter for Monday Night Football. NFL for ABC, and this after being a sports reporter and anchor for companies in southern California for about a decade.

“I was criticized unfairly and I think a lot of it was due to racism,” says Guerrero, who recalls that even before her debut, she was already treated with a lot of rejection. It is worth mentioning that In addition to being a sportswriter, she has already been an actress, model, and even an NFL cheerleader with the Rams..

“I think calling myself Guerrero, having long hair and a glamorous look is part of what my mother was, it’s part of my heritage,” she says. “I find that Latinos, in different ways, are more comfortable with their sexuality and femininity than other women. I felt very comfortable and safe, and I think that bothered a lot of mainstream media when they talked about me.”

Lisa Guerrero, a mistake in her debut and a downward spiral

Guerrero’s debut on Monday Night Football took place on September 4, 2003 in a game between the New York Jets and the Washington team in the nation’s capital. At the end of the game, she interviewed winning quarterback Patrick Ramsey of the Washington team, but when asked about wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who excelled in the game, she said, “Your former teammate.”

Although Guerrero immediately corrected the situation, his mistake caused a flurry of ridicule and criticism.

“This mistake gave all the critics everything they needed to say, ‘Come on, she’s a jerk, she’s got a pretty face, she doesn’t know anything about sports.’ And that, plus being yelled at by a boss who was very verbally abusive, set off a downward spiral. I had depression, anxiety, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I was afraid every day that I would be fired,” says Guerrero in a chat with La Opinión.

Guerrero says her producer kept yelling at her during games through a headset because he wanted her to say things the way he wanted her to and told her to memorize comments.

The worst happened in a later transmission. Lisa Guerrero was bleeding dangerously in the middle of the game. she was pregnant.

“I had a miscarriage at a Monday Night Football game in front of 40 million people who didn’t know about it,” says the then 39-year-old journalist.

“At halftime, I went into the referee’s bathroom and bled out,” Guerrero adds in his story. “But instead of calling an ambulance and instead of telling my producer that I had a medical emergency, I covered it up, ignored the pain. and I went out in the second half of the game to continue reporting because of how much I was afraid of criticism. I thought I’d get fired for this. I was very ashamed.”

Depressed journalist almost committed suicide

She was fired from ABC after that first season and says the next year was a nightmare for her: “I was ashamed, I thought I had failed my family’s name, that I wasn’t a Warrior, and I almost took mine. life is like an anus.

She tells in the book and in conversation that While driving his car on the PCH, California’s famous coastal highway, he almost drove off a cliff..

Guerrero says that instead he stopped the car and called his father, told him everything that was happening to him. “It was the first step in my recovery, talking to my father and a therapist,” he says.

This was the end of Lisa Guerrero in sports journalism. But that was not the end of his distinguished career as a reporter. How did you manage to rediscover yourself? She explains this in an interview.

“I wrote this in my book because I want people to know that there is always someone who gets criticism and verbal abuse, or ‘trolls’ on social media, or when you yell at someone. And those consequences can be deadly,” he adds.
