According to the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, early Wednesday morning there was an attack with explosives on soldiers who were in Catatumboa coca-growing area on the border with Venezuela, resulting in the deaths of members of the armed forces.
The army of the South American country confirmed that nine soldiers were killed in the attack; of which 7 soldiers and 2 non-commissioned officers. Authorities attributed the attack to the ANO’s Camilo Torres front, which began explosive devices and fired at with rifle bursts soldiers conducting operations in the area.
General Helder Giraldo, commander of the armed forces, reported that the attack was against a platoon of an army unit who conducted security operations on the Caño Limon-Coveñas pipeline. “This is not a unit that conducted offensive operations,” he explained.
The authorities also stressed that in addition to the dead, nine more soldiers were wounded in this attack. The military has indicated that authorities are continuing military operations in the area to find those responsible for the attack.
He Minister of DefenseIvan Velasquez, condemned the attack this morning and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“In the attack carried out in Catatumbo, 9 soldiers, 9 peace fighters, were killed. Feeling rejected for the fact that it contributes very little to the world and it looks more like a contradiction with these peaceful purposes,” said the head of the defense portfolio.
The President rejects the attack and calls in his negotiating team for a consultation.
He Colombian President Gustavo Petro denied this fact. violence via Twitter and said that the perpetrators are far from the world.
“Complete renunciation of the attack on an army platoon in Catatumbo, 7 ex-military soldiers and 2 non-commissioned officers, soldiers of the Nation and the government of change, killed by those who today are absolutely far from the world and people,” wrote Petro on Twitter.
Likewise, Peter He called his negotiating team for consultations for the world that began negotiations with ELN about a month ago in Mexico.
“I called a government delegation to the ANO table for a consultation., guarantor and accompanying countries. The peace process must be serious and accountable to Colombian society,” President Petro added on his official Twitter account.
