Justin Miller contacted fine art auction houses. Sotheby’s valuated the chair between $30,000 and $50,000.
Justin Miller, 33, paid $50 for a chair he found on Facebook Marketplace in February. Now auction house Sotheby’s estimates his purchase at up to $50,000. Insider talks about it.
The man, who is active on TikTok, said he spends hours every day browsing the Facebook Marketplace while helping a friend renovate his house. The publication states that the man knows a lot about good design. He worked as a design producer for the Emmy-winning “Homework” program at Magnolia Network and spent six years shooting celebrity photo shoots.
When Justin saw the wing chair, he thought its unique shape might be worth a lot of money. According to the man, he quickly checked the prices of similar furniture on Google and was surprised.
A woman selling unwanted items of a family friend in exchange for a percentage of the profit organized a street sale only to be told by passers-by that these were banned in Beverly Hills. She took photos for speed and offered to have everything delivered the same day she did. Miller even remembers silently praying that the woman didn’t have time to sell the goods while she was stuck in traffic.

Miller explained the incident to his followers in a TikTok video dated February 13. The video went viral with over 2.3 million views. The man believes it’s the comments on the social network that tell him how rare and valuable his purchase is.
For example, a user nicknamed Minya noted that actress Kirsten Dunst had the same chair during a house tour in 2021 and discussed it. Interior designer Jane Hallworth says Danish designer Henningsen has made only 50 of these chairs and has been “looking for one for years.”
Replying to @miztermiller @dazonic For anyone who thinks I’m lying about owning the chair, here it is. Heading to NYC soon for the big auction in June! #homedecor #interiordesign #diy #thrifted #antiques #sothebys #thrifthaul ♬ Only You X Playdate – ded4$$
At the insistence of the audience, Miller contacted fine art auction houses. Soon she got an enthusiastic response from Sotheby’s. On June 7, 2023, the auction house will list Miller’s purchase as part of the Significant Design sale. The chair is currently worth between $30,000 and $50,000.
