On April 20, the Latvian Parliament quickly passed a law banning public events on May 9, the press service Sejm.

“The Saeima adopted a new law, according to which on May 9 it is forbidden to hold certain public events, celebrations, rallies, processions and pickets in the public space throughout Latvia”– stated in the statement.

Also in the country, the new law prohibits the use of any pyrotechnics until the morning of May 10.

This is not the first attempt by the Latvian authorities to ban the celebration of Victory Day. So, in 2022, on May 9, access to the monument to the liberators of Riga was closed, and the flowers laid on it were removed.

At the same time, celebration of the Nazi ideology is now actively flourishing in Latvia. On March 17 of this year, it was proposed in Riga to name a street in memory of the Latvian SS legionnaires, and on March 16 a procession of the Waffen-SS and their supporters took place. The deputy of the Jelgava City Council, who came to the event with an anti-fascist slogan, was completely detained.
