Severe coastal storms hit the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship over the weekend, flooding some of the ship’s decks and delaying its return to port.

According to Fox Weather, a major storm hit Sunshine off the southeast coast of the United States on its way back to the Bahamas from a Memorial Day trip. Big waves, heavy rain and strong winds shook the ship, injuring and frightening some passengers.

One of the videos posted on social networks shows serious damage to some decks of the ship. Its corridors flooded and debris was scattered everywhere.

A passenger posted images of the interior of the cabin when the storm hit the ship, adding that customers were evacuated from one of the bars after more than 30 liquor bottles fell and shattered from the bar.

Some Carnival Sunshine passengers reported getting sick during the storm. Others, including Christa Seyfert-Alicea and Daniel Taylor, told WCIV-TV that they had not received any news or new information about the storm from the ship’s crew for over 12 hours.

“What we went through is indescribable, not just feeling for yourself but hearing and seeing how everyone around you – adults, children and the elderly – fell – this is something I will never forget. This is the worst nightmare,” Seifert-Alicea said in an interview with WCIV-TV.

A video posted on Twitter shows the aftermath of the hurricane on Sunday morning.

Carnival Cruise Line said the ship’s return to Charleston was “impacted by the weather and choppy seas on Saturday.”

“Long exposure to weather conditions in the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival, resulting in delays in loading the next flight as well. Thank you for the patience and understanding of all our guests. Carnival Sunshine is now embarking on its next voyage.”
