The number of Ukrainian refugees left homeless in the UK has doubled in the last six months

3,010 Ukrainian families have been homeless since the end of November 2022; As of May, the total number of homeless families born in Ukraine was 5,995.

The number of families who are refugees from Ukraine has more than doubled in the last six months. Now about 700 families live in temporary housing. This is reported in UK government official data.

According to official estimates published monthly by the Department of Housing and Communities:

  • 3,010 families have been homeless since the end of November 2022; While the total number of homeless families was 5,995 compared to May, it was 2,985 in November 2022;
  • homeless families with children have nearly doubled since November 2022, from 2,070 to 4,025;
  • The number of childless families of Ukrainian refugees without shelter has more than doubled, from 915 to 1,890.

The Ukraine Extension Program allows citizens of Ukraine whose permit to stay in the UK expires on or before 1 January 2022 to stay legally in the country.

Of the 5,995 families left homeless, 3,800 participated in the Homes for Ukraine Program, and 1,475 came to the UK as part of the Family Programme.

According to the data announced at the beginning of the year, the number of families in the temporary shelter has reached 100 thousand. These are the record numbers of the last 20 years.

“Thanks to the generosity of Homes for Ukraine’s ‘sponsors’, 123,400 Ukrainians were able to move to the UK,” said a DLUHC spokesperson.

According to him, all Ukrainians in the UK can find work or study from the first day of their stay, and payments to so-called sponsors have been increased to £500 per month.

Should the host country no longer be able to provide housing, authorities will have to ensure that people are not left without a roof over their heads.

“We are providing expanded financing for those who need it most, including an additional £150m to help Ukrainian guests relocate their own homes and £750m to purchase housing for Ukrainian and Afghan families,” DLUHC said.

Recall that according to the new bill, more than 30,000 Ukrainian refugees in Ireland will receive a residence permit.

It was also reported that hundreds of Ukrainian refugees could be evacuated from a cruise ship in Scotland by July.
