Until it’s clear: Putin cancels “direct line” with Russians because of war against Ukraine

The Russian dictator canceled the “direct line” with the residents of the Russian Federation for the second time – this time, allegedly, it was postponed to the end of autumn or the beginning of winter.

The direct line of Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place this year, and most likely in November-December. The Russian newspaper Kommersant writes about it, citing a source from the presidential administration.

According to the press secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov, there is no exact date for the direct line. According to the source, President Putin’s direct line was previously scheduled for the summer, although it is tentatively scheduled for the end of the year.

“It is now tentatively scheduled for November-December,” explains a source from the presidential administration. According to him, the choice of such a time period is connected with the situation in the zone of “special military operations”.

The direct line format has been held in the Russian Federation since 2001 and has become traditional and annual for Putin. The direct line was even made from 2008 to 2012, when Vladimir Putin served as prime minister. The direct line last took place in 2021. In April, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the direct line would take place this year. In June, he announced that “routine preparations” had been made for the format, as it was a very complex event both technically and in terms of content, but did not specify the time of implementation.

Asked if Kommersant would expect a direct line in December this year, Peskov said: “There are no exact dates for the direct line. We have not disclosed them. We will let you know as soon as it is clear.”

The American Institute for War Studies ISW has suggested that Putin will draw a “direct line” in early June 2023 following the capture of Bakhmut by the Russian Armed Forces, and his refusal to communicate with the Russians indicates he perceives the Kremlin has been captured. Bakhmut as a meager victory of knowledge to compensate for a common Russia. The institute’s analysts believe that the delay of the Direct Line forum further illustrates Putin’s downfall.

Recall that Putin’s press service reported that he did not intend to hold a meeting in the Kherson region after the explosion of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and the subsequent flooding of the territories.
