New York Governor Katie Hochul signed into law this Sunday, as part of the LGBTQ+ Pride parade, legislation that makes the state a “safe haven” for trans youth.

The Democrat noted in her speech at the start of the march that other conservative state governments have “introduced more than 500 anti-LGBTQ laws” this year, which she called “an injustice.”

“We are going to make New York a haven for trans youth across the country,” Hochul said.

The legislation signed by the Governor today ensures that New York State will protect transgender youth, their parents and doctors.

For his part, actor and singer Billy Porter, who hosted this year’s gay pride parade, said that despite the progress made in recent decades for the LGBTQ+ community, now in the US it is seen as a “sick and malicious attempt to sideline these victims”.

“Governors Ron DeSantis (Florida) and Greg Abbott (Texas) don’t even want us to say the word “gay” (in schools), they want to deny gender-affirming health care to transgender youth, and they want to criminalize parents and doctors. who they just want to help kids,” Porter explained, emphasizing the importance of New York being a haven for these people.

Anthony Valentukonis traveled from Frontier State Connecticut to show his support for the community and explained that he has been coming to New York Pride for over a decade.

“It used to be less crowded and it was a lot of fun. There are a lot more people now, but it’s still a lot of fun,” he said.

Another thing that has changed from other years is the number of street vendors that sell all sorts of paraphernalia: giant fans, rainbow flags of all sizes, face painting, food and lots of booze.

Priscilla Alvarez noted that despite the lack of permits for the sale of tequila jelly – three for $ 10 – on the street and the fact that the area is full of police officers, she is not afraid of a fine. “The police no longer have the right to do something against us,” he added.

Alvarez grew up in the Big Apple, and this is the first time she has sold her products on the street and participated in a gay parade.

“All my friends are from the community and I came to support and earn some money to pay the rent,” he stressed.
