The defense ministry noted that Taipei considers the 12-mile area near the island its territorial waters and airspace, so enemy targets will be destroyed.
Taiwanese armed forces are ready to destroy the planes and ships of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) if they enter the 12-mile zone (about 22.2 km) near the island. On Tuesday, June 27, Taiwanese defense ministry representative, Major General Lin Wenhuang, whose statement was quoted by Taiwan Central News Agency, warned of this.
According to Wenhuang, Taipei refers to this area as its airspace and territorial waters, so if PLA planes or ships cross the midline of the Taiwan Strait, the Taiwanese armed forces will take action.
“If PLA forces ignore our warnings and continue to enter our terrestrial airspace and waters, we will respond quickly to protect national security,” he said.
It is known that Taiwan’s military leadership has repeatedly stated that in the event of an incident from the Chinese side, they will not first use weapons, so as not to give mainland China “an excuse to launch an invasion”.
China’s stance on Taiwan
Recall, on April 21, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the country and that it is “right” for one to defend its sovereignty, thus signaling its rights in these lands.
In early May, it was learned that China was considering using force to seize Taiwan.
