The 59-year-old presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, was killed during an election rally in Ecuador, local newspaper El Universo reported.
The politician was shot three times in the head while getting into his car after a political rally at Anderson College Coliseum in Quito.
The incident occurred around 18:20. Witnesses noted that they saw shots fired and that Villavicencio fell to the ground with serious injuries. He was hospitalized in one of the local hospitals, where he died.
The total number of casualties is currently unknown, but sources close to the island said there will be about eight, with seven of them ending up at the same medical facility.
The National Police conducted an operation to identify those responsible – the streets near the college were closed. According to preliminary data, 3 people opened fire on the politician. Police continue to search for the third perpetrator.
