Coins instead of military relics: “time capsule” of the late 18th century opened in the USA (photo)

Here, experts expected to find valuable military artifacts or historical documents that could be more than 200 years old. However, they were disappointed.

The US Military Academy at West Point held a ceremony in which the 200-year-old box placed by students on the pedestal of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko monument was opened. The box was expected to contain valuable artifacts in the form of valuable late 18th century military documents, but several coins were found instead. The Military Times publication writes about it.

Yes, under the lead box were six American silver coins of 1795-1828, and a commemorative medal – a 1795 5-cent coin, 1800 dollars, a 25-cent 1818 coin, 10 cents and 1 cent. Coins from 1827 have been preserved, and a 50-cent piece from 1828 and an 1826 Erie Canal commemorative medal have also been found. Various expert websites indicate that the potential value of most coins ranges from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000 depending on their status.

This result disappointed those present, including archaeologist Paul Hudson, who took the box to his laboratory after the ceremony and began carefully sifting through the sediment with special tools.

Hudson said, “Soon after, the edge of the coin appeared inside the box. This is normal. This is something, this is the beginning.”

He said that he, like everyone else, was disappointed with the disappointing results of the autopsy.

Hudson added that it’s better to remove coins and medals under certain conditions, but still plans to analyze the sediment to learn more about what else might be inside. The archaeologist emphasized that, apparently, moisture seeped into the box from a damaged joint – such conditions can lead to decay of organic materials such as paper or wood.

“I think we can learn a lot from this to learn about the history of the academy and the history of the country,” Hudson summed up.

It was previously reported that treasure hunters in Wales found a collection of Iron Age gold coins. Coins belonging to the Korieltauvi tribe turned out to be minted between 60 and 20 BC.
