Patriot missiles from Japan: Tokyo will allow the transfer of weapons to the USA and Europe – media

Tokyo is preparing to update its defense export rules as early as Friday, journalists said.

On Friday, December 22, Japan will consider the possibility of allowing the supply of its missiles for the Patriot air defense system not only to the United States, but also to European countries. Nikkei Asia reports this.

According to journalists, Tokyo will update its instructions regarding the export of defense products. This will make it possible to ship not only missiles but also other military equipment to countries where production patent holders are located. For example, Japan can now only supply licensed equipment components to the United States.

It has been reported that Tokyo will allow countries purchasing military products to transfer them to third countries with prior permission. The exception, of course, are states with military conflicts.

True, as is obvious, such a decision will really help the United States to continue supplying Ukraine with its own weapons. While the American army’s reserves were running out, Washington requested from Tokyo to supply missiles for the Patriot air defense system.

The publication also noted that Patriot missiles are also important for Japan’s defense, for example, to intercept North Korea’s ballistic missiles after potential launches. Since Japan has only a small surplus of these missiles, it will need to ensure that exports do not impact North Korea’s deterrent.

It should be noted that American journalists had previously reported that the United States would ask Japan for help in transferring missiles for the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. US President Joe Biden raised the issue with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David in August. Japan, concerned that Russia’s invasion could push China to take similar action against Taiwan, supports Ukraine.
