The former leader of pro-Russian militants has 700 supporters who are not afraid to try to nominate him for the presidency of the Russian Federation.
Former Colonel of the FSB of the Russian Federation Igor Girkin-Strelkov, who was in a pre-trial detention center on charges of extremism, did not become a candidate for the presidency of Russia. The initiative group was unable to complete the registration due to the large refusal of Moscow notaries to register the signatures of its supporters. Girkin’s attempts to become president of Russia were reported on the portal TheMoscow Times.
Important
The situation that developed during Girkin’s presidential candidacy became known thanks to a series of publications on Telegram by his supporters, as well as representatives of the Russian media. As a result, the required number of signatures was collected, but could not be made official due to notary procedures.
As it turned out, on December 24, about 700 people gathered at the Izmailovo Hotel in Moscow who wanted to participate in collecting signatures in support of the arrested Russian. The fact that there were a lot of people is evidenced by photographs of Girkin’s wife, Miroslava Reginskaya. The photo taken from behind those present shows hundreds of hands raised in the air.
At some point they began collecting signatures and passport information from those who initiated Girkin’s presidential bid. We collected 521 signatures written by eyewitnesses of the event. A special notary was present at the meeting, who was supposed to certify that the signatures were collected without violations – this was reported on the Telegram channel of journalist Alexei Polorotov “Attention, Media”. However, the notary refused to fulfill the contract. The organizers then approached four more lawyers, but none agreed to help the suspected extremist’s accomplices.
Moscow Times journalists referred to the attitude of Reginskaya, who believed that signatures could be recorded later. But they note that it is unlikely to do this outside the meeting – this violates the relevant laws of the Russian Federation on presidential elections. The portal reported in November that Strelkov was attempting to compete with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The prisoner also claimed that he had advantages: he was not as “polite and trustworthy” as Putin, he did not have billionaire friends, and he was more knowledgeable in military matters.
Elections in the Russian Federation – details of the presidential election
Igor Girkin-Strelkov is a Russian propagandist and soldier who served in the FSB of the Russian Federation. The Russians took an active part in the hostilities in 2014 – after which they managed to temporarily occupy Slavyansk in the Donetsk region. A former FSB colonel accused of shooting down the Boeing MH-17 has been sentenced to life in prison in absentia. The man is today in a pre-trial detention center in Moscow, where he remains after being extremely critical of the actions of the military command.
It is worth noting that presidential elections in the Russian Federation should be held in the spring of 2024. Russian President Putin has already expressed his desire to once again participate in the presidential race – he stated this at a meeting with the military of the Russian Armed Forces fighting in Ukraine. Western media calculated that if the politician won again, he would remain in power longer than USSR General Secretary Joseph Stalin.
Meanwhile, Putin began appointing deputies to campaign in different regions of the Russian Federation. It was learned that among those trusted were Russian military personnel who spread propaganda messages about the Russia-Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, journalists analyzed the behavior of Putin, who wants to be president for a fifth term. They concluded that he alternated periods of activity with days when he appeared tired and disappeared from public space.
