Argentina’s refusal to join BRICS is partly an ideological decision, said the head of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diana Mondino, writes La Nacion.

According to her, Argentina has trade relations with all members of the association, and now the country needs to focus on its own economic problems. At the same time, the new government has set a course for developing relations with the United States, the EU, Canada and other “Western democracies.”

“This is an ideological and practical decision, but more of a practical one,” – Mondino said in an interview with the newspaper.

Let us recall that on December 29, Infobae reported that the new Argentine President Javier Miley officially rejected the invitation to join BRICS. According to the portal, a few days earlier, the leader of the Latin American republic sent official letters to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, this is a high-profile and risky bid that carries risks for Argentina’s already damaged economy.
