Hungary blocked the signing of a joint statement by the EU countries, which was timed to coincide with the two-year anniversary of the conflict in Ukraine. The agency reported this Bloomberg with reference to sources.
Hungary’s veto made it impossible to publish the document on behalf of all EU members. As a result, the statement was published only on behalf of the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the President of the EC Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
In Budapest, as indicated in the material, they did not talk about the reasons for their decision.
At the same time, according to journalists’ sources, in addition to Hungary, there was one EU member state that expressed doubts about some sections of the statement. What kind of country it was is not named, but it is noted that it is not a member of NATO.
Let us recall that last week Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban pointed out that the EU strategy on Ukraine “obviously failed.” The politician also emphasized that despite the discontent of “large countries,” Budapest still does not intend to supply weapons to Kyiv, and will not allow itself to be drawn into the Ukrainian conflict.
According to Orban, the European Union needs a change of leadership, since the current EU authorities have abandoned Europeans to their fate.
