A father and son from Saskatchewan, Canada, discovered this rarity while cleaning their home and going through old trash cans.
A bag containing 16 sealed boxes of Canadian hockey cards from the 1970s and 80s was sold at an auction in Dallas (USA). According to the New York Times, an anonymous buyer purchased this land for a record sum of $3.72 million. Previously, this rare piece was found by a Canadian father and son while cleaning their house.
Interestingly, the contents of the suitcase are still unknown because the boxes have never been opened. It is believed that dozens of rare cards of the famous hockey player Wayne Gretzky from 1979 are stored here. At auctions, their prices reach millions of dollars.
According to sports card expert Jason Symonds, the box contains 16 boxes of 48 packs each; These boxes contain a total of approximately 10,000 cards from 396 players. There might be 25-30 copies of Gretzky in there.
However, the condition of the collection remains a mystery; Cards may be damaged, smudged or misaligned in print. The expert suggests that the buyer will most likely not open the boxes to preserve the uniqueness of the lot.
Meanwhile, a father and son from Saskatchewan noticed this rarity while cleaning out their home, which featured a pantry filled with boxes from floor to ceiling. As it turned out, the father was an “avid” collector and would often buy several boxes of cards from the distributor each year and sell or trade them.
Last year, a 1979 Wayne Gretzky card sold at auction for a record $3.75 million; Therefore, the value of unopened boxes may increase over time.
Let’s remember this before Focus wrote about a man who found $376,000 worth of coins on a farm. On the obverse, all details are clearly visible, including the engraved “D” marking indicating the place of production – Denver (USA).
Additionally, Amber Betteridge, from Rubyvale in Central Queensland, Australia, accidentally found a “stone” worth about $6,000 in her garden. The Australian’s surprise knew no bounds when the piece of stone turned out to be a rare 54-carat party sapphire.
