Fans of the Roman football club Lazio became involved in an international scandal after they chanted pro-fascist slogans in a historic Munich beer hall. Rome City Council member Alessandro Onorato called this behavior shameful.
The incident occurred on the eve of the match with FC Bayern in Munich. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lazio fans sang fascist chants and gave “Roman salutes.” A video of the incident began to circulate online.
“This is a disgrace for the team, for all the fans and for Rome. I strongly condemn what happened and am outraged by what can be seen in the footage, which, unfortunately, is being circulated around the world at these hours.”,” Onorato said.
He also pointed out that such behavior does not reflect the mood in Rome, but is a “wake-up call” that will prompt the authorities to take responsibility for “a stance of unequivocal condemnation” of such incidents.
“Anti-fascism is a prerequisite for being Italian. Those who do not recognize themselves must be marginalized”,” Onotaro emphasized. His words lead Adnkronos.
The politician is confident that minimizing condemnations fuels in some Italians thoughts about the possibility of maintaining a position other than anti-fascism.
It is worth noting that the Hofbrauhaus beer hall, where the incident with the Italian fans took place, is considered historical because in 1920 it was there that Adolf Hitler created the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP). The establishment was considered the dictator’s favorite, and he visited the bar several times.
