The use of income from Russian assets frozen in Europe for military assistance to Kyiv was called legal by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He called this use of these revenues “a huge step forward.”

“These windfalls that arose due to the freeze situation are not owed to anyone, so the European Union can receive them and use them for these purposes.”Scholz said on March 22 during a press conference, his words led RIA News.

According to Scholz, international law and other rights that must be respected were “carefully examined” in this matter. The German Chancellor, also in response to a request to clarify how soon this money could be used, said that this would happen “quickly.”

“There is little left to discuss. The legal basis has already been created… what remains is to create the basis for use”, Scholz said. He added that the European Commission is already working on this.

Let us recall that, as stated by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, by July 1, the EU hopes to transfer a billion euros from Russian assets to weapons for Ukraine. She also noted that this will be possible to do if the development of a mechanism for their withdrawal is quickly completed.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said on March 22 that such a step would entail serious consequences. He pointed out that the profits from the assets, like the frozen funds themselves, belong to Russia, despite the fact that Brussels is trying to convince everyone otherwise.
