Don’t leave home: Tajik immigrants in Russian Federation fear being sent to the front – NYT

The current mood in society is reminiscent of the 2000s, when Muslims in the Caucasus faced widespread discrimination following a series of terrorist attacks and the conflict in Chechnya.

In Moscow, immigrants from Tajikistan are trying not to leave their homes because they fear being deported or sent to fight in Ukraine due to the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall. The New York Times writes about this.

It was learned that 4 of those detained due to the armed attack at Crocus City Hall shopping center were from Tajikistan. For this reason, anti-immigrant rhetoric has intensified on Russian social networks. Authorities have vowed to tighten their action against immigrants to meet the demands of those who support the war.

More fear and anger: Russia uses Crocus terror attack against Ukraine and the West – ISW

As statistics in the Russian Federation show, last year almost 1 million citizens of Tajikistan – labor migrants – were officially registered in Russia.

The manager of one of the companies where Tajik immigrants work told NYT that the current mood in society is reminiscent of the 2000s, when Caucasian Muslims were subjected to widespread discrimination after terrorist attacks and the war in Chechnya.

“Tajiks in Moscow are so afraid they almost never go out,” he said.

Tajik human rights activist Saidanvar, who recently left Moscow, said that citizens of Tajikistan in the Russian Federation now fear not only deportation, but also being drawn into the war against Ukraine.

“Tajiks are really afraid that the Russian authorities will start sending them en masse to the front to take revenge against our Tajik people,” he said.

Shooting at Crocus City Hall in Moscow

On March 22 in Moscow, unidentified men armed with machine guns entered the Crocus City Hall shopping center and began shooting at visitors.

The mall security guards had only a stun gun as a weapon. Eyewitnesses said that the attackers entered the building from two directions and were well prepared.

Several shooters were later detained, and Russian security forces cut off the ear of one of the demonstrators and tried to force him to eat it.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky denies Ukraine’s involvement in the terrorist attack.
