Now is not the time: Ukraine has decided to drop mass immigration controls

Now in Ukraine, they will check the places of residence of displaced persons only in cases where law enforcement officials apply to the social protection authorities of the population and are suspected of receiving illegal assistance.

There will be no mass inspections in the place of residence of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the near future. This was expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk.

According to him, the authorities do not plan to completely abandon inspections because the state is obliged to control the targeted use of funds. At the same time, the government does not want to constantly check people and accidentally deprive them of payments.

“Now people should not stand in line at social security authorities to verify the relevance of specified place of residence when air raid warnings, electricity and communication problems are constantly heard,” he said.

Irina Vereshchuk added that Ukraine should clearly define the grounds on which IDPs will be controlled. To do this, the Ministry of Reintegration organized a meeting dedicated to the protection of the rights of IDPs, where it was decided that now in Ukraine they will control the residence of IDPs only in cases where law enforcement contacts have been contacted. social protection authorities in case of suspected illegal aid.

The immigrant should be informed about this by phone. In all other cases, instant checks of IDPs’ places of residence are not permitted.

Immigrant checks: checks they can deprive of government payments

Recall, on October 14, 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a resolution that reinstated controls over the places of residence of immigrants. According to a government decree, benefits can be obtained from IDP citizens who have moved to a new place of temporary residence and have not alerted social services about it.

If it turns out that a person has left the place of residence indicated earlier, he will have to apply to the regional social security institution at the place of residence within 10 calendar days. If the settler ignores this obligation, living expenses will be deducted from the next month.

How much does the government pay for internally displaced people?

In addition to lump sum payments from international aid projects, there is also a monthly allowance from the state for IDPs. Payouts are not huge:

  • 2 thousand UAH received by healthy adult Ukrainians
  • Children and people with disabilities are paid UAH 3,000.

However, due to their regularity, the payments are a serious aid to many internally displaced people who are unable to earn a stable income because of the war.
