Alliance, wounded

Another hectic week in national politics. One of many to be seen on the horizon with continuity extended. And on the legislative question, the president Lopez Obrador had significant triumphs, with the approval of the transfer National Guard to Secretary of National Defense and a maneuver that has the edge of a breakthrough to Opposition Alliance PRI-PAN-PRD.

PRI did the dirty work for Morena and the National Palace with the presentation of the initiative of Deputy Yolanda de la Torre to extend until 2028 the period for the military to continue to fulfill the tasks of public security. Confirmation that Alejandro Moreno, Alito, served two masters and only one of them was good.

Jesus Zambrano, national leader of the PRD, confirmed to me in an interview on Heraldo Radio that he had a tense meeting on Wednesday night, Marco Cortes and Alejandro Moreno, where they complained to the leader of the PRI that he did not comply with the constitutional moratorium on the president’s initiatives. There were no agreements. They admit that trust between the three is very broken, but he told me that they hope that the union, suspended today, can still be saved.

If, as planned, the PRI initiative continues its legislative course, Zambrano confirmed to me that even if the deputies approve it, the tricolor bench in the Senate will vote against it, in bloc with the opposition; an interesting move by which they could claim that the obligations were not violated. But anything can happen.

While some believe that the alliance may still be alive, it’s time to see its electoral effectiveness: out of 20 state elections in 2021 and 2022, the three allied parties managed to keep only three that do not have outstanding electoral weight.

In the midst of a pause in Congress, a new opposition to the National Palace could form. Civic coordinators see an opportunity for a legislative alliance with the National Action Party, but not in the electoral realm. A move that can be beneficial for the oranges as long as they get things done. At this point, Enrique Alfaro, governor of Jalisco, has already thrown the first stone and declared that the Va Por México coalition is weak. In the legislative field, the alliance also has negative results. Although constitutional reforms were averted, with a simple majority of Morena and her allies, they reversed them. It’s not the same in the Senate, where the so-called “containment bloc” managed to stop the steamrollers and accelerated actions. This bloc was not an agreement of the party leaders. Perhaps that is why Miguel Angel Osorio Chong becomes a counterweight to Alejandro Moreno, who, in spite of everything, clings to the national leadership.

It will be another figure to leave the Senate, the fence from which Ricardo Monreal declared his independence from the executive branch.
