A spokesman for European Council President Charles Michel confirmed that the Ukrainian leader was invited to a summit on February 9 to discuss Ukraine, immigration and the bloc’s response to the US inflation-reducing bill.
The European Union is preparing to host Volodymyr Zelensky at the summit to be held in Brussels on February 9. But security concerns could derail the Ukrainian president’s travel plans. This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.
According to journalists, the head of state of Ukraine is also expected to speak at a special session of the European Parliament.
Answering a question about the possibility of a trip to Brussels during the Ukraine-EU summit in Kiev on February 3, the president said that such a visit is difficult from a security standpoint.
“To be honest, if I go somewhere then there are big risks. That’s true,” he said later.
Charles Michel, press secretary of the President of the European Council, confirmed that Volodymyr Zelensky was invited to the summit. However, the representative of the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the Spokesperson of the President of Ukraine Serhiy Nikiforov declined to comment on the issue.
The summit reportedly reportedly already planned for a meeting of 27 EU leaders on February 9 to discuss Ukraine, immigration and the bloc’s response to the US inflation law.
Recall, on February 1, Polish media wrote that Volodymyr Zelenskyy may visit Poland to meet with Polish and US Presidents Andrzej Duda and Joe Biden. The Ukrainian leader is expected to present a peace plan and raise issues of security guarantees.
On December 21, Zelensky arrived in the United States to meet with Biden. The presidents of the two states discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, after which the head of the White House announced the transfer of the Patriot air defense system to Kiev. This was Zelensky’s first overseas visit since the Russian invasion.
