Oscar de la Hoya doesn’t rule out working with Canelo Alvarez again in the future

Despite the fact that in 2020 he ended his contractual relationship with Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of working with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez again in the future. The former world champion in six different divisions assured that the return of Guadalajara to the promoter would be a big event for the general public.

In an interview with The DAZN Boxing Show, De La Hoya indicated that they both have experience and knowledge as promoters, so you never know if there will be an opportunity to join forces again at some point in boxing.

“Imagine Canelo returning to Golden Boy for a mega fight. This would be a wonderful event. I wish him all the best, he is building his legacy and I want him to have these great matches to continue to do so because he is at the end of his career,” said the founder of Golden Boy Promotions.

The relationship between the two has been staggering since 2019 after Oscar De La Hoya insisted on making a trilogy with Gennady Golovkin ahead of his fight with Sergey Kovalev. Then in 2020 Canelo Alvarez filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN for breach of contract and was released. Under the agreement, the boxer from Guadalajara will fight 11 fights for $365 million over five years, but only three fights have taken place in that time.

For De La Hoya, in an interview with La Opinión, Eddie Reynoso was at fault for breaking his contract with the undisputed super middleweight champion (168 pounds).

“I put all the blame on his coach Eddie Reynoso. I think I once criticized him by saying to the media that Eddie Reynoso needs help to maybe improve Canelo’s style a little more to raise his hand instead of raising his head when he throws the hook. I criticized him a little and it created tension because Eddie and Canelo are best friends, so what I say about Eddie Reynoso will hurt Canelo. I’m not sure, but I think that’s what started the fight.”, he commented.
