A computer for Russian drones was created in Crimea: they used the Chinese Allwinner chip

According to the developers, the Grape Pi 1 device will be responsible for the operation of computer vision of unmanned systems. With its help, combat aircraft of the Russian Armed Forces can bypass electronic warfare systems and carry out attacks more accurately.

Developers from the Crimean Federal University named after Vernadsky announced the creation of a computer that will be responsible for the functioning of computer vision of drones. According to the university’s website, the device will be installed on drones.

It is known that the computer is only 40×40 mm in size and fits on a single card. Grape Pi 1 is called Chinese quad-core Allwinner H616 processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, 1 GB RAM, SSD card slot, USB 2.0 connectors, HDMI and video output.

The new version will be released without an HDMI connector, but will be able to connect SPI (SPI – a bus for connecting peripheral devices – ed.) and I2C (I2C – a serial bus for transmitting 8-bit data between processors and sensors). ed.). They also promise to reduce the size of the board to 30×30 mm. This will be done for the purpose of attaching the device to the USB camera body of the drone. So they plan to modify the drone using this module.

The university emphasized that the laboratory created at the university is engaged in the creation of unmanned vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) applications, including relevant hardware. Engineers are developing computers whose modules can be placed on a single board, which will save space and allow such electronics to be integrated into any unmanned platform.

The university noted that ready-made solutions available on the market do not always meet the requirements of some unmanned devices. For example, some microelectronics have connectors that are absolutely unnecessary for connecting the device to the display. Or not all channels of the CSI interface have outputs to connectors for connecting to video cameras.

So-called “Cheburashka”: Russian Armed Forces now have a system for capturing video feeds of Ukrainian Armed Forces drones – ISW

Developers claim that their device has everything needed and no unnecessary parts, which makes it cheaper than analogues on the market.

We previously wrote that the Russian Armed Forces have started using “smart” unmanned aerial vehicles with machine vision. With its help, drones can bypass electronic warfare and fly to the target on their own, said military analyst Sergei “Flash” Beskrestnov.

It was also reported that the Russian Federation gifted the Joker-10 FPV unmanned aerial vehicle, which poses two major threats to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian drones are designed for ambushes and surprise attacks. It has the ability to remain in “hibernation” mode for days without radio communication and to be activated on command.
