Builders discover WWII Jewish treasure in courtyard in Poland

O 400 items believed to have been hidden in the ground by their Jewish owners during World War II were accidentally discovered during renovation work on the house. in a courtyard in Lodz, in central Poland.

According to local media reports, history experts say the items found include Hanukkah menorahs and objects used in daily life.

According to the testimony, perfume bottles and mouthpieces were also found in a hoard located about 28 inches underground.

Some of the items were found wrapped in Polish, Yiddish and German newspapers dated around October 1939, according to the Israeli news site Ynet.

Gazezia Wyborcza, an archaeologist from Łódź, said the items appeared to have been buried in a hurry. It is believed that there used to be a synagogue on the site of the building.

These are mainly silverware, menorahs and glass cosmetic containers.This is reported by the Regional Office for the Preservation of Historic Sites. Last week, the bureau’s specialists announced that the objects would be handed over to the city’s archaeological museum.

“The discovery is remarkable, especially the amount,” said Agnieszka Kowalewska-Wujcik, head of the Łódź Municipal Investment Council. “These are extremely valuable historical items that testify to the history of the inhabitants of this building,” he told Polish media.

After restoration and cleaning, the items found in the treasure will be delivered to the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography in Lodz.where investigators will attempt to identify the item’s owner.
