Biden pushes for gun control reform after Mississippi mass shooting

In one word summed up the President’s response Joe Biden still mass shooting V Mississippi which left six dead on Friday: “enough.”

“Jill and I mourn the six who died in today’s violence in Tate County, Mississippi, as we mourned for too many Americans,” the president said. “We mourn with their families and with Americans across the country as gun violence claims more lives. We also pray for the recovery of those affected by this horrific attack and for the survivors who will endure pain and trauma for the rest of their lives.”

The shooting took place on Friday in the Arkabutla community in Tate County, Mississippi. Police arrested 52-year-old Richard Dale Crum, who was seen in a car on Arkabutla Dam Street. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Tate County Jail without bail.

It was the second mass shooting in Mississippi in a week.

Sunday, February 12, four teenagers and one adult were involved in the shooting of six people in a store in Louisville, Mississippi. Devonte McMillian, 23, died from his injuries on Monday, February 13.

The president made the statement in a press release citing the alarming statistics of mass shootings across the country: “Enough. It is now 48 days a year, and our country has already suffered at least 73 mass executions. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Gun violence is an epidemic and Congress must act now.”

“We need, we need common sense gun law reforms. This includes requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, completely closing the loophole for boyfriends and girlfriends to keep guns from being available to domestic abusers, requiring guns to be safely stored, and removing immunity from gun manufacturers who knowingly place military weapons on our streets,” President Biden said.

The President called these steps “common sense” that Congress could take right now and save lives. “We owe it to American communities that are being torn apart by gun violence,” the president said.
