NATO is concerned about a possible war over Taiwan, as evidenced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s statement on the Asian region made at the Munich conference. This is reported by the Chinese state newspaper Global Times.

The publication recalled the words of Stoltenberg that what is happening now in Europe may soon be repeated in Asia. According to the newspaper, these words were perceived by many as concern about a possible war over Taiwan.

Chinese military expert Song Zhongping, in an interview with the publication, noted that the United States hopes that NATO can reach a new level of influence and expand its presence around the world.

To achieve this, the US needs to spin new “external threats” as well as “bring together member states whose interests do not always coincide and force them to spend more on their military budget,” the newspaper said.

Earlier in a report prepared by the Washington-based non-governmental Center for Strategic and International Studies, it was said that the United States has the ability to repel the potential use of force by Beijing to ensure the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China. However, Washington and its allies will have to pay a huge price for this.

The aggravation of the situation around Taiwan occurred in August 2022 after a visit to the island at that time by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. China considers Taiwan its territory and condemned the politician’s visit. After that, the PRC decided to hold large-scale military exercises.

Official relations between the central government of China and its province of Taiwan broke off in 1949. Business and informal contacts between the island and the PRC resumed in the late 1980s. Since the 1990s, the parties have been in contact through the Beijing Association for the Development of Relations across the Taiwan Strait and the Taipei Foundation for Cross-Strait Exchanges.
