Republican Senator Travis Hutson of St. Augustine introduced Senate Election Bill Amendment recently filed that “clarifies” that the state’s “resign to run” law does not apply to those who campaign for President or Vice President of the United States.
Hutson is one of the sponsors of the election bill SB 7050, which has gone through two committees and will be presented to the full Senate on Wednesday.
The proposal, which is part of an amendment to the electoral bill, exempt candidates for president or vice president from state opt-out laws.
This law says that any public servant who “is eligible to hold a federal public office shall resign from the office currently held if the conditions, or any part thereof, are met at the same time.”
By exempting presidential or vice presidential candidates from this requirement, the bill ensures that DeSantis can run for president in 2024 without having to step down as governor.

In a statement, Nikki Fried, chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, said today that Republican lawmakers are “enabling DeSantis to pursue national ambitions while failing Floridians on the issues that affect them most.”
