New York judge dismisses ex-president’s lawsuit Donald Trump filed against The New York Times and its journalists in 2021 for disclosing their tax return in a 2018 Times article.

Judge Reid wrote, in his opinion, that Trump’s allegations were “unsound in terms of constitutional law.”

“Courts have long recognized that reporters have the right to engage in legitimate, ordinary news-gathering activities without fear of tort liability, since these activities are at the core of activities protected by the First Amendment,” Reid continued.

In a statement, New York Times spokesman Charlie Stadtlander said the Times was “pleased with the judge’s decision today.”

“This is an important precedent that reaffirms that the press is protected when it engages in routine news gathering to obtain information of vital importance to society.”

The former president faces a number of legal challenges in New York as a defendant.
