“Long-term problem”: the most severe labor shortage in the last 30 years in the Russian Federation

According to a study by the institute Yegor Gaidar, in April 2023, 35% of enterprises had no workers. This is the worst number since 1996.

Russia is experiencing its largest labor shortage since Russian President Vladimir Putin came to power. Politico writes about it, citing a study by the Yegor Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy.

A survey of representatives of about 1,000 industrial enterprises in Russia reportedly showed a shortage of workers in 35% of enterprises in April 2023. This is the worst number since 1996. This famine was partly due to the mobilization that Putin announced last September.

RBC’s Russian edition reported that the institute’s head of commercial research, Sergei Tsukhlo, said the labor shortage in Russia is a “profound and long-term problem”. This problem is holding back the industrial capacities of the Russian Federation.

Tsukhlo also said that labor shortages are particularly acute in light industry as well as in engineering. Local entrepreneurs have been given opportunities by the withdrawal of Western companies from the market, but the shortage of workers means there is no one to develop the Russian business.

Recall that on May 17, the Russian media reported that the developers of hypersonic missiles in Russia were arrested for treason. According to journalists, lawsuits were filed against 16 people in the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of them died in prison after being arrested.

Also, The New York Times reported that Russia circumvented US sanctions and purchased millions of dollars’ worth of aircraft parts. According to journalists, in 2022 dozens of shipments of American copper wire, bolts, graphite and other parts entered the warehouses of Aeroflot and other companies. The total delivery amount exceeded 14 million dollars.
