Romanian Prime Minister calls for preservation of European unity to stop Putin – media

Marcel Ciolacu assured that his country will continue to assist Ukraine despite the political costs. The Romanian Prime Minister also did not rule out the possibility that a “Putin doubling down” could occur among some European populist politicians.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku said Ukraine’s allies must stand firmly behind Kiev or risk emboldening populist forces in Europe with Vladimir Putin’s victory. According to Bloomberg, he stated this in an interview with journalists in his office in Bucharest on November 6.

Ciolaku said his government would continue to provide “all-round support” to Ukraine even as its European allies show signs of war fatigue, especially at a time when the conflict between Israel and Hamas has overshadowed the Russian invasion.

According to the Prime Minister, the conflict in the Middle East will most likely be resolved more quickly than the war in neighboring Romania.

“Romania will continue to assist Ukraine despite the political costs. The political costs are less important than the precedent that a Russian victory would set,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted the increasing support from right-wing and populist forces across Europe; many of them criticized the governments’ support for Ukraine and lamented the severing of ties with the Kremlin.

“Can you imagine how much Putin will double down among some European populist politicians?” – Colaku asked.

European Union leaders are clearly presenting a united front against Russia as they discuss a 12th round of sanctions targeting 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) in trade with Russia.

Let’s remember, on October 26, it was reported that Romania had installed an anti-UAV system on the Ukrainian border. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis admitted that soldiers were unable to detect drones at an altitude of more than half a kilometer.
