Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a law suspending the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), transmits office of the Polish leader.

The office explained that the suspension of the treaty means that Poland, while formally remaining a party to the agreement, will not be obliged to comply with its provisions.

The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe was signed in 1990 between NATO states and the Warsaw Pact countries, including Poland. This agreement was one of the symptoms of the end of the Cold War.

The parties that signed this agreement agreed to reduce the offensive conventional weapons available at that time and maintain them at a certain level.

The commitments covered five categories of conventional military forces: battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, combat aircraft and attack helicopters.

Russia finally withdrew from the CFE Treaty on November 7, 2023. As a result, the Budapest Agreement of 1990 and the Flank Document of 1996, related to the volume of armaments of countries, have lost force for our country.

After this, the British Foreign Office announced an indefinite suspension of participation in the CFE Treaty of all NATO countries.
