Manufacturer TSMC will introduce 2 nm process technology for processor production in 5-6 years. All that’s left is to figure out how to pack such a large number of transistors onto a single wafer.
At the last IEDM conference, manufacturer TSMC announced the development of chips with 1 trillion transistors. According to the Toms hardware report, it will be possible to place such a large number of transistors on a silicon wafer thanks to 3D packaging.
TSMC is also trying to create chips with 200 billion transistors on a single silicon wafer. To achieve this goal, the company is developing 2nm class production nodes (N2 and N2P) and also introducing 1.4nm A14 class and 1nm A10 class process technologies. The deadline set by the manufacturer is 2030.
In addition, TSMC predicts that CoWoS, InFO, SoIC and similar technologies will be developed that will enable the creation of multi-chip solutions containing more than 1 trillion transistors by 2030.
In recent years, the development of advanced process technologies has slowed down somewhat as chip manufacturers have faced technological and financial difficulties. But TSMC is confident that it will be able to improve its production nodes in terms of performance, power and transistor density in the next 5 or 6 years.
By far the most complex monolithic processor with 80 billion transistors on the market is the Nvidia GH100. TSMC hopes to outperform rivals even as such chips become increasingly complex and expensive to create.
